Welcome to IPFW and the Walter E. Helmke Library, the only public university library in northeast Indiana. The library's services and facilities are available to IPFW students, faculty and staff and to residents of Indiana and visitors. Our goal is to provide a virtual and physical environment that fully supports IPFW's mission and goals.
A big change is coming to the library in 2015-2016; our physical environment will be undergoing a transformation! The library renovation will start in late 2015 and continue through 2016. The renovation will bring refreshed lighting, increased electrical capacity, wireless and sprinklers, energy-efficient heating and cooling, a fortified foundation and new finishings throughout the building. While the building is being renovated, our full services – librarian consultation, the library website, databases and e-resources, document delivery, retrieving books or other items for checkouts, Ask a Librarian and more -- will still be available. Learn more and follow the timeline in our Library Refresh news.
The library offers excellent services, quality collections, and inviting facilities for study, research, and collaboration. Subject librarians provide research consulting on a walk-in basis and by appointment; information services are also available by IM (chat), phone (260-481-6505), e-mail (email@example.com) and Facebook.
The library's information literacy mission reflects the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education and the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) VALUE rubric on Information Literacy. Simply stated, mastery of information literacy competency standards mean that a student will Ask the Right Questions, Find the Best Resources, Consider the Quality of the Information, Complete a Project and Credit the Sources.
The partnership shared by librarians, students and faculty is designed to support IPFW students in becoming self-sufficient, life-long learners.
The library supports faculty and staff, too, in staying current with research and news in their discipline or business area, academic publishing, copyright, citation tracking and more.
The library's Web site is designed for discovery. IPFW students, faculty and staff have 24/7 access to thousands of electronic books, journals and databases, the IU and WorldCat catalogs, and a responsive and efficient document delivery service. Our online course-related and subject-oriented Topic Guides as well as specialized information centers are populated with resources selected and reviewed for authenticity and reliability by IPFW librarians, such as the Government Gateway and Business Resource Center. Our mDON: mastodon Digital Object Network is a growing digital library of IPFW and local community resources and Opus: Research & Creativity at IPFW repository digitally stores faculty, staff and student publications and accomplishments and makes them visible to the world.
The library building houses a print collection of nearly 1,000,000 items. Indiana residents as well as IPFW students, faculty and staff are welcome to checkout items from the library's circulating collection.
The library provides both quiet and collaborative spaces for reading and study. In addition, The Learning Commons on the second floor houses flexible group study areas and a laptop and iPad checkout service for IPFW students, faculty and staff. The Library also houses open-access student computers all linked to the IPFW campus network. Free wireless access is available to all library users.
We encourage you to visit the library, ask questions and explore new ideas. Library staff members are knowledgeable, collaborative, and ready to help you succeed in all your information quests and requests.
